But a mysterious boat explosion and the discovery of unidentifiable body parts keeps Anna anchored to the present, and she soon finds crimes of yesterday and today closing in on her. A tangled web that was woven before she arrived threatens her sanity and her life.

It's been awhile since I've read a Nevada Barr novel and I'd almost forgotten how much I enjoy her stories. After just a few pages, I was reminded why she is one of my favorite authors. Park ranger Anna Pigeon has been transferred to Fort Jefferson on Garden Key, a small island fort that was used as a prison during the Civil War. Anna's great, great aunt Raffia was the wife of the Captain of the fort and Anna has the letters Raffia wrote home to her sister telling her about her life in the fort. While Anna investigates a boat explosion off shore, she is also deeply into Raffia's letters and the reader gets two good stories for the price of one. With some authors, landscape descriptions can be tedious and even annoying, but Barr is a master at this and her descriptions are so rich and real they transport the reader effortlessly to the places in the story. From diving amongst the coral reefs to walking the parade ground of the fort during the Civil War the stories unravel. The danger in Anna's and the danger in Raffia's world increase page by page until the suspense is almost unbearable. This book goes to the top of my Nevada Barr favorites list.

Anna Pigeon is always interesting in her various exploits. Like the way that history is written into her experience here. A quick read.
Interesting to have two stories in two different time periods.
Michael Palmer takes current science and comes up with truly plausible scenarios even if science isn't quite there. Flashback is one of these. It shows a realistic "hospital politics" situation and, while solving a a medical mystery, gives the reader engrossed with all the right ingredients from science to love with twists that are believable. I found it wonderfully entertaining.
Love Anna Pigeon! Great story, fun to travel through the stories to all our National Parks. A great read. Can't wait to read another!
I love Nevada Barr books. They are always a good read and very entertaining. When I want to just kick back and enjoy a great story then Nevada Barr is for me. I am not a scuba diver but I love the ocean and the descriptions of the water and diving are great. I could feel the warm waters of Florida as I read Flashback. The parallel stories of mystery and suspense were well written and vivid in description. Love this book.
